Corn Cutter Update

by KitchenBoy on July 10, 2010

Last year, I wrote an article, Aww Shucks the Corn is on the Cob, about how to best take kernels off corn. I still stand by the recommendations in that article for the best methods – either by hand with a sharp paring knife or using an adjustable mandoline.

Beyond those two suggestions, also I stand by my favored tool, the Kuhn Rikon “Y-shaped” corn cutter.

However, there is a new entry this year from OXO which made me want to post an update. I first saw it at the International Home & Housewares show in March and it is now hitting stores. In the previous post, you may have seen that I was not fond of the OXO corn cutter which collected the kernels in a “cup” (and I am still not), but the new offering, which looks more like a typical vegetable peeler, is note worthy.

It will quickly and easily remove several rows of kernels with each pass, just like the Kuhn Rikon model. Both the Kuhn Rikon and OXO models can be used by right and left handed people and are designed to more readily stay in line with the cob, removing the kernels cleanly and without getting stuck. The biggest difference is in the handle/cutter design, which will be personal and must be held to determine your preference.

I prefer the Y-shaped style of Kuhn Rikon, but the OXO may feel better in your hand, particularly if you prefer the straight style of a vegetable peeler.

I am glad to see OXO continuing to improve their designs. They have made a very good product here and will effectively serve people’s corn removal needs.

how does the pampered chef tool compare? i just purchased one but havent had the opportunity to use it.

  5. The Pampered Chef version works a lot like the Kuhn Rikon and newest OXO version. The difference is the motion. The Pampered Chef version you push from top to bottom, Kuhn Rikon and OXO versions you pull toward you. I think you will like it.
