Favorite Kitchen Shops Updated

by KitchenBoy on August 15, 2010

I have recently received more feedback regarding favorite kitchenware shops around the world. So armed with new information, I thought it was time to update the list and see if anyone else had some suggestions.

The original page, Favorite Kitchen Shops, which can also be accessed by clicking above, was a list of shops I knew or had visited as I traveled. In the original post, I listed some rules for submissions which still apply…

  • NO department stores (Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Harrods, etc). The reason being that while these large stores sell culinary items, they are not specialists in the culinary field.
  • I DO allow Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table. Why? Because even though they are national chains, they are also culinary specialists and do sell hard to find products.
  • NO online culinary retailers. Why? There are literally thousands out there and I don’t want to become a repository of online information. UNLESS, that online shop also has a “bricks and mortar” location.
  • NO fee based or limited access shops. If you need to submit a business license or fee to access the shop then it isn’t for our list here. I want only places where anyone can walk in and shop. It can be a shop for professionals but must also sell to everyday “Joe and Jane”.
  • When you provide the information please submit as much information as you know about the shop, such as shop name, city, state, country, physical address, web address, if they have one, and the reason you like it.
  • New Entries

From Helen C. and Richard H., I was reminded about one of the first and greatest culinary shops in the USA, Zabars in Manhattan, NY. Nothing really beats Zabars for its combination of food, housewares, books and well, everything culinary. It is a must visit location. I am embarrassed I left it off my original list.

In Alexandria, VA there is a great shop, La Cuisine. It has been in business as a one owner, single location shop for 40 years. Located just south of Washington, DC in a charming, historic town, you can find a collection of the most classic tools for the kitchen. From their website, “Our goal has never been to sell trendy gadgets with dubious uses … nor has it ever been to settle for price over quality. Instead we sell products from the best manufacturers we can find in the world. We pay close attention to durability and design.” I have read many mission statements over the years, none have ever made more sense.

Another suggestion from Helen C. can be found in Portland, OR. Since 1975, Kitchen Kaboodle has been Portland’s go-to store for people looking to make their house a home. Kaboodle has been honored as one of the nation’s top 25 kitchen stores of the last 25 years. An excellent independent shop with a few locations in the Portland metro area. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly and ready to help you solve your home culinary needs.

    Portland, OR 97210
