Gourmet Magazine is Back

In a post from October of 2009, where I communicated the demise of Gourmet Magazine, I made a bold prediction that the magazine would be resurrected by someone. I was beginning to feel like my prognostication career was over before it began.

But today we learned that Gourmet Magazine is back, just not in a format that I had anticipated. We learned from an article on the Huffington Post that Gourmet Magazine is being relaunched as a digital app called Gourmet Live.

Interestingly, for those who had mixed feelings about her, Ruth Reichl will not be a part of this new endeavor.

This is an intriguing test vehicle for magazines and newspapers. I believe that the future of the printed media will be the online/phone app path. My wife and I were discussing this just the other morning and we agreed you can see the handwriting on the wall.

I have, from time to time, brought my laptop into the kitchen for viewing recipes or videos while preparing a meal. At present I am still more likely to print the recipe and take it into the kitchen. Can you really prepare a meal while paging down on your phone?

The question for Gourmet Magazine is, does the brand carry enough cachet with the “phone app generation” to find success as a paid service? And are the “old-timers”, who followed the magazine from the golden days of print, willing to adapt?

The success of Gourmet Live will be determined by this and the actual execution of the app. This Gourmet Live app will likely evolve and may have a big impact on how we view our information based content.
