Julie & Julia, the Movie

by KitchenBoy on August 15, 2009

I have just returned from seeing Julie & Julia. While I am not a movie reviewer but rather a blogging kitchen gadget reviewer, I did want to say something about the movie. After all, it is a movie about Julia Child, culinary giant, and a blogger.

I enjoyed the movie very much, and my friend Deb was spot on when she said, “Meryl Streep nailed it!” Meryl Streep is simply delightful as Julia Child and Stanley Tucci is terrific as Paul Child. If you are a fan of Julia Child, you will fall in love with her all over again. If you only know of her in passing, go see this movie and learn about a big piece of culinary history in America. One even learns a bit about Irma Rombauer, the author of Joy of Cooking.

Not long ago, there was a young woman, in her early 20s, who was shopping in the store. While we were talking “shop”, I came to find out she was in culinary school and I pointed to a photograph of Julia we keep in the shop and said, “…well she is always watching over us…” and to my surprise, this person didn’t know of Julia Child. I didn’t believe her at first, but insisted this young woman needed to find out who she was, because Julia Child played a huge part in breaking down barriers making it possible for a woman to be treated seriously as a chef.

While watching the movie and watching like the third character make beef bourguignon, I whispered to my wife that a lot of cows are going to be cooked up in a stew as a result of this movie.

In the end, I wanted the movie to be called, Julia and more Julia. I couldn’t wait for the Julia Child portions of the movie to come back on screen. To me, the movie would have been much more interesting if we had seen Julia move on from the book publishing and transition to television, seeing the changes made in the American culinary scene due to her popularity. However, I am an admitted culinary geek and huge Julia Child fan.

If you want to buy the book that started it all, go to Jessica’s Biscuit right now. Take your time, though, and don’t try cook everything in a single year. ;-)
