Thoughts on the Wal-Mart employee death
I must take time to talk about the death last weekend, of Jdimytai Damour. As a retail worker I can sympathize with his life and job situation. I cannot imagine a scene like that at my place of employment, but what a horror!
There are many to blame here. First and foremost, I send my thoughts and heartfelt prayers to heaven for Mr. Damour’s family and loved ones. No one should have to die under these circumstances, particularly a situation so preventable.
The blame for this tragedy is to be shared equally between the insane mob who killed Mr. Damour and Wal-Mart. No matter what sort of deal or discount any company is offering, there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for such cannibalistic behavior! This crowd of animals never even stopped to think that another human being was in front of them, attempting to help them I might add, and not only pushed this man down and crushed him to death, but broke the doors to do so. Their behavior is inexcusable. I hope these people, if they are capable of human emotion, never forget the hand they played in this man’s death. However, I believe each of them will claim to their dying day that they didn’t do anything, “it wasn’t me”, they will say. Well a large number of people contributed to Mr. Damour’s death and no amount of denial will change that fact. Shame on their mindless greed!
Wal-Mart and all companies like them, who created and/or contributed to this monster called “Black Friday”, share an equal portion of the blame here. These 4am, 5am, 7am deals and “deep” discounts are unnecessary and not actually good for business. Many companies lose money on that Friday and throughout the weekend all to create the impression that the whole holiday season is filled with bargains. This indicator of holiday retail sales, which doesn’t accurately tell the final story anyway, created this environment where human beings fueled by fear and greed gave up their sense of humanity. If it was true that people tended to shop on the Friday after Thanksgiving and the media reported on economists who noticed a trend on that day, why did retailers fuel the fires with special discounts? Simple…GREED!
These companies don’t care about the people who work for them. They will sell their souls for one extra nickel. Stores used be closed on some holidays and they did so, not because they had any feelings or attachment for the meaning of the holiday, but because it was a way to give employees a chance to rest. The managers and full-time employees of retail stores need breaks from the grind and stress. Because of Wal-Mart mainly, even small retail companies are staying open everyday. Remember Sunday? It used to be a time for relaxing with friends and family. Now it is just another retail business day. I don’t care whether you respect Saturday or Sunday as your sabbath rest, just take a day off from work and spend that time relaxing.
Greed led companies to create this downward spiraling environment and greed led the shoppers to give up their sanity. The combination killed a man. Shame on all of us!
